midwest america part two

By Emma Geller

next morning
they found our bodies
by the lake.

we were turned
away from each other,
backs staring at the shore.

you wanted to
break my heart
& i refused

by the water.

we ended up
just like we started.

the final scene,
in the film of our life,
it wasn’t heartbreaking,
but not a happy ending either.

flash

By Emma Geller

you called me
a lightning bolt
in a bottle,
i was all

electric light.
against the background
of the mountains,

electric light
against the sky.

silent instead, i shocked you
with my smile, eyes wide,
running away, stopping
for no one.

when i left,
you didn’t know
i was still there,
next to you,

I had become
your shadow
of smoke,
your burnout.

virgin

By Emma Geller

with violent lace
& bridal veil,
she made promises
no one else could keep.

unless one wished
to die on a bed,
all white & naked
with remorse for him.

with his ugly rage
that coursed in river streams,
it raged all over her,
she’s drowning

it raged all over her,
she’s drowning

midwest america part one

By Emma Geller

your hand
on my thigh,
when we’re driving,
doesn’t feel like it used to

 & we don’t talk
at the gas station
when we stop
for water & cigarettes

we keep driving down
highways, curving
through states
we don’t stop
to take pictures

we keep moving
though there is nowhere to go.

iris

By Emma Geller

between the shutters, i saw
the shadow of your body but

in our dreams we were kissing,
in a meadow of ashes & iris.

your pretty lips, a tropical storm
destroying me, so when you

flew away, i wanted to chase you,
but i couldn’t move.

dead girl

By Emma Geller

small town secrets-
clasp death
in lockets churning.

and marshy tides
wash clean
her pale hands-

it happened too early,
this little girl could’ve been
a mother.

but pure,
she faded.
locked in time,
she left earth,
for heavenly places.

dog star

By Emma Geller

pebble tears,
all mountain eyed,
in early lush
spring afternoon-

where symbolism
mingled with
the knotted roots
of that day.

the black dog
crept closer to me,
not soft eyed but
all teeth, out to prey

with a darkwood
lurch,
i got stuck
in a solar city,

surrounded by
dogwood docks-
lunging
at the waves.

summer kill

By Emma Geller

chipped blue
paint, rain tracks
& sad eyes,

she wandered thru
abandoned parking lots,
under the humid summer sky-

the pavement
crashing
on those lonely
yellow lines.

sweetheart

By Emma Geller

in the bar, her silver
hips swirl
in circles,

across cement floors,
on tables too.
a velvet flick

of her wrist
reflects neon
Blue Moon signs.

of her wrist
reflects neon
Blue Moon signs.

an eyelash
of destiny,
whispering fortunes
in her ears-

singing her songs
of cracked stars
& broken hearts.

teeth

By Emma Geller

i hope this cut scars,
so i can remember
your wild ways,
those

zombie stitches,
yellow skin.
your open wound
with teeth edges-

i want you to leave
your mark on me.
though we never touched,
your bite still bleeds.
