The Assault

By Anthony Aguero

He lunged towards my body:

Erect knob cutting towards the East.

He wanted me dead or unknowing &

He wanted me dead while shirtless &

Glistening: beautiful stone skipping

Across quiet water distracting the eye

From seeing the boy at the bottom of

The lake. Drowning & already dead, or

Assumed deceased, & blue at the lips,

He is advancing towards my body:

Rustling Oleander trying to slip into

My mouth. I release my tongue, but

Not for pleasure — for escape & He

Only sees a boy with snapped arms

& thinks This! is mine — this & so

He moves closer; stones in his eyes,

& his cock is billowing wisps of smoke

— the machination of his body

Is about to prepare for his sweet-kill.

But I know of his next move & I open

My mouth in defense of this: my body.

Sadness Of Course

By Anthony Aguero

The baby is on fire, somewhere outside, Underneath the ashen-palm leaves.

Nobody bothers to hear its cries because

Sadness, of course. The sky trickles, no,

Is falling from its endless socket & lands

On the hair follicles of a baby with two teeth.

& it lands on the sticky-thighs of a naked

Man in a house a few blocks over from this

Burning baby, & on the tip of the tongue of

A woman galloping off to work. The leaves

Are falling at an exponential rate & nobody

Claims stake to them & so they dry & dry

Until a faceless body leaves a child, a baby

Only, underneath matured palm leaves &

Leaves. Who tends to your sadness?

A lonely man walks by & is cold — so cold

He notices a mound of lonely palm leaves;

Dried like the forgotten rivers & lakes &

Loves history has left no record of — &

So he sets it on fire. & so it is burning.

Somewhere, inside, the sadness melting.
